Nate Silver - clearly out of his league on science - is trying to be cute with a challenge to global warming skeptics.
“1. For each day that the high temperature in your hometown is at least 1 degree Fahrenheit above average, as listed by Weather Underground, you owe me $25. For each day that it is at least 1 degree Fahrenheit below average, I owe you $25.
2. The challenge proceeds in monthly intervals, with the first month being August. At the end of each month, we’ll tally up the winning and losing days and the loser writes the winner a check for the balance.”
First, it’s not even good science, as determining whether or not global warming is occurring takes more than than just a few days of +/- temperatures, even for $25. It’s interesting that he picks the Weather Underground, as it’s operated by global warming cheerleaders, Jeff Masters and Alan Steremberg.
For the record The highest recorded temperature was 109 degrees at Monticello, in Florida’s Panhandle, on June 29, 1931. The lowest recorded temperature was 2 degrees below zero at Tallahassee on February 13, 1899. Today it’s 92 in Monticello (that’s $25 for me), I’ll update Tallahassee in February.
