Al Sharpton Tax Cheat

He’s not a “savior”, he’s a crook.

“Big corporations give him money. Presidential candidates seek his endorsement. He has influential friends in Congress and the governor’s mansion.

The Rev. Al Sharpton has emerged over the past decade as perhaps the nation’s most prominent civil rights leader, a status that was demonstrated again this week when he led protests against police brutality that briefly shut down six of Manhattan’s major bridges and tunnels.

But he still carries baggage from his early days as a fire-breathing agitator: Government records obtained by The Associated Press indicate that Sharpton and his business entities owe nearly $1.5 million in overdue taxes and associated penalties.

Now the U.S. attorney is investigating his nonprofit group, an inquiry that an undeterred Sharpton brushes off as the kind of annoyance that civil rights figures have come to expect from the government.

“Whatever retaliation they do on me, we never stop,” Sharpton said. “I think that that is why they try to intimidate us.”

Just like Sharpton to claim prosecution. The fact is he’s a crook, the old fashion garden variety tax cheat, and it’s been going on for a while.

“Sharpton’s own debts include $365,558 owed in New York City income tax and $931,397 in unpaid federal income tax, according to a lien filed by the Internal Revenue Service last spring. His for-profit company, Rev. Al Communications, owes the state another $175,962 in delinquent taxes.”

..In 1990, he was acquitted of tax fraud and charges that he stole from one of his charities. He followed that up with what was essentially another victory in a tax case by pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of failing to file a state return.”

Here’s to hoping to that U.S. Attorney Benton Campbell does the right thing and refer charges to this tax cheat.

Sharpton Get His Wish - Arrested for “Slowing Down” NYC

Reverend Justice!

“The Rev. Al Sharpton and nearly 200 others were arrested Wednesday amid a series of protests throughout the city, part of a response to the acquittals of three New York City undercover detectives in the 50-shot killing of Sean Bell.

Hundreds took to the streets in Manhattan and Brooklyn as part of the citywide “slowdown” effort led by Sharpton and his National Action Network. Police arrested those who took part in acts of civil disobedience by blocking the streets to rally, along with entrances to the Triborough, Manhattan, and Brooklyn bridges.

Sharpton was arrested without incident at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge, along with Bell’s fiancé, Nicole Paultre Bell, and the two shooting victims who survived, Trent Benefield and Joseph Guzman.

Bell’s parents were also arrested.”

Of course you can get anyone fired up to go up against “Da Man”.

“One of the arrested protesters told CBS 2 HD  on Wednesday the protests go far beyond Bell’s death alone.

“We have to stand up for something or we’ll fall for anything. It’s not just about Sean Bell, it’s about every man that’s been injustly killed in America,” he said. “The point to make to the people is to get their attention. It could be their son tomorrow or their daughter tomorrow.”

Watch out, Al Sharpton might just get charged under the Patriot Act

Sharpton is threatening to shut down NYC.

“NEW YORK (AP) - Hundreds of angry people marched through Harlem on Saturday after the Rev. Al Sharpton promised to “close this city down” to protest the acquittals of three police detectives in the 50-shot barrage that killed a groom on his wedding day and wounded two friends.

“We strategically know how to stop the city so people stand still and realize that you do not have the right to shoot down unarmed, innocent civilians,” Sharpton told an overflow crowd of several hundred people at his National Action Network office in the historically black Manhattan neighborhood. “This city is going to deal with the blood of Sean Bell.”

Sharpton was joined by the family of 23-year-old Sean Bell - a black man - and a friend of Bell who was wounded in the 2006 shooting outside a Queens strip club. Two of the three officers charged were also black.

The rally at Sharpton’s office was followed by a 20-block march down Malcolm X Boulevard and then across 125th Street, Harlem’s main business thoroughfare, where some bystanders yelled out “Kill the police!”

Fifty of the marchers carried white placards bearing big black numbers for each of the police bullets fired at Bell and his friends.
Sharpton urged people to return for a meeting this coming week “to plan the day that we will close this city down” with the kind of “massive civil disobedience” once led by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

“They never accused Sean Bell of doing anything. Then why is he dead?” Sharpton asked, his voice roaring with anger. Authorities “have shown now that they will not hold police accountable. Well, guess what? If you won’t, we will!”

“Shut it down! Shut it down!” the crowd chanted, standing up and applauding wildly.”

Al had better watch it. In the 60s “civil disobedience” was a relatively light charge, but today after 9/11 the rules have changed. In fact “Shutting down New York City” may be considered……a terrorist attack.

Are we having fun now?

To be specific: Section 802 of the USA PATRIOT Act (Pub. L. No. 107-52) defines that a person engages in domestic terrorism if they do an act “”dangerous to human life”" that is a violation of the criminal laws of a state or the United States, if the act appears to be intended to: (i) intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination or kidnapping.

Sharpton’s threat to shut down a critical infrastructure such as NYC could be under Section 802 be considered a “terrorist act” because it seems applicable to (i) and (ii).

I know, “fat chance” Blumberg would even make the move, but he could be trumped by the feds although I don’t see it happening.

Nevertheless we can dream can’t we?
