Alarm’s went off this morning after a “boom” was heard. Halon was released and the center was evacuated, three to four dispatchers were transported with respiratory problems.

Halon is a fire retardant used instead of sprinklers because water would be dangerous for the equipment.

More to come.

UPDATE: Here’s the story from WFOR:

“Emergency operators at the Miami Police Department’s 911 call center were evacuated early Sunday morning after something tripped the buildings fire alarm system.

According to Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll, phone operators on the 4th floor of the Miami Police Department headquarters reported hearing a strange noise then a boom. The fire suppression system activated, spraying Halon throughout the floor. Halons are gases used as fire-extinguishing agents.

As the alarm sounded, the building was evacuated and calls were routed to Miami Dade Police dispatch. Carroll said there was no interruption of emergency services.

Four of the phone center’s operators were treated for breathing difficulties.

Fire rescue investigators are now checking to see what may have triggered the fire alarm system. “

Updates if warranted…

UPDATE: II No fire, the trigger for the Halon system malfunctioned. The center is back up.
